Mass Graves

Just in time for the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (KLIBF), veteran journalist Arulldas Sinnappan recounts how he combed through dense, hilly forests near Malaysia’s northern border to unearth one of the darkest chapters of the country’s history—death camps and mass graves of mostly Rohingya refugees fleeing persecution.

The operation which followed led to the discovery of of 147 mass graves and the skeletal remains of about 130 victims, all of whom held in the transit camps by human traffickers for ransom. After years of relative inaction from the government, an RCI was convened in 2019, but the result—that Malaysian authorities were negligent, not culpable—caused great public dissatisfaction, especially since the equivalent discovery in Thailand ended with the conviction of top army personnel, including the ‘Monster of Wang Kelian,’ Manas Kongpan.
