Malayland

Fresh off the heels of her short story collection King of the Sea, Dina Zaman explores what it means to be Malay in the 21st century in Malayland.

A co-publication of Ethos Books and Faction Press, Dina’s memoir traces the roots of contemporary radicalism to the Reformasi movement after the ousting of then-deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim in 1998, which Dina argues set the nation on a more extremist path. This now manifests in fundamentalist assertions of identity among certain segments of society under the guise of nationalism, at the expense of the gentle humour of the country’s past.

Malayland is available for pre-order on the Ethos Books, LitBooks and Gerakbudaya sites.
